Vincent Miles will discuss the top of his book, The Lost Hero of Cape cod: Catpain Asa Eldridge and the Maritime Trade that Shaped America. Not only was Captain Eldridge hand-picked by Cornelius Vanderbilt to skipper his private steam yacht on a four-month cruise around Europe, but in 1854, Captain Eldridge sailed a clipper ship from New York to Liverpool, Engand and set a trans-Atlantic speed record that still stands today. Captain Eldreig's vast experience included commeanding a cariety of sailing velles worldwide, and part of his intrigue is that the various phases of his career coincided with key developments in martime commerce. Vincent Miles is origianlly form Liverpool, England and has lived in the U.S. snce 1984. After realizing that Captain Asa Eldridge had lived right around the corner from his Cape Cod home and had sailed to Mile's hometown of Liverpook, he felt compelled to learn more - The Lost Hero of Cape Cod is the result of his efforts.
